Around the World in 80 Careers: Film Location Scout

27th July 2022

Day 13

Following on from their exciting day in Mykonos but still feeling sore from their injury, our explorer felt relieved that their hotel was only a short walk from the ferry terminal where they were to travel to the island of Santorini. They hoped the whitewashed, cubiform clifftop buildings and surrounding turquoise Aegean seas would be a suitable place for relaxation and to consider their onward route.

As our explorer boarded the ferry, the father of a local family noticed their slight limp and asked if they would like help with their rucksack. They appreciated the hand as the boarding ramp was fairly steep and slightly slippery. Once the ferry had left the terminal and settled into its short journey, the man introduced himself as Yiannis, a Santorini native who owned a small café in the capital of Fira. He was concerned about our traveller’s ability to find somewhere reasonable to stay at short notice as the island was in peak season. As they bonded further, Yiannis offered a room for the night, and although aware they had only just met him, our explorer felt relieved they would not have to spend time searching for a hostel.

As the ferry docked into Athinios, Yiannis introduced the rest of his family, including his son, Jules. Before our explorer could ask, Yiannis explained that Jules was named after Jules Verne, who had visited Santorini on one of his travels and mentions Santorini in his book “Twenty thousand leagues under the sea.” Jules then continued by explaining that many movies had been filmed on the island as Yiannis’ wife rolled her eyes, presumably as she had heard the stories many times before!

Jules offered to drive the ‘scenic route’ back to their home giving our explorer a brief tour of the island’s highlights. They drove past the Red Beach in the South, given its name from the deep red volcanic rock circling its sandy beach, up to the picturesque village of Oia in the north, whose clifftops views were as breath-taking as our explorer had hoped. Jules also indicated the filming sites of famous movies as he sped around the narrow roads.

As they arrived back to the family home, Yiannis prepared a traditional Santorini lunch including cherry tomatoes he had grown himself and a salad made from the local vegetable, fava. Our explorer was shown to a small guest room, and after leaving their bag on the bed, they sat in a small chair overlooking a local vineyard and considered careers in the film industry that could bring him back to Santorini for work…

After an hour or so to himself, Jules knocked on the door excitedly and invited our explorer to spend the evening at the family café…
