Around the World in 80 Careers: Healthcare Cleaning Operative

11th July 2022

Day 12

Our adventurer boarded the super yacht and marvelled at the decadence of the vessel. Despite the nerves at the thought of serving the guests, the explorer quickly adapted, gained valuable experience, built strong relationships with the crew and even the wealthy family that owned the yacht. After speaking to the owner, he found out about their plans to island-hop across Aegean Sea. The Aegean separates Greece and Turkey and contains over 1400 islands that make up the Greek archipelago. This gave the explorer the idea of heading to Turkey, to experiment with the wonderful, unique spices in their pursuit of being a mixologist. They could smell the cinnamon, cardamon and nutmeg of the spice bazaars already.

After a long leg, island-hopping across the Aegean, the explorer eventually arrived at the Greek Island of Mykonos. Bidding farewell to the crew, they continued onwards with their journey, meandering through the lively island. The explorer could see why the island was a perfect destination for holiday makers from its pristine beaches, historical windmills, quaint tavernas and amazing nightlife.

Whilst walking along Paradise Beach, our adventurer came across the Mykonos Diving Centre, which offered snorkelling adventure trips at a reasonable price. The trip had been non-stop since the start, so they thought this was the perfect opportunity to slow down and enjoy the wonders beneath Mykonos’ blue waters. The boat arrived and took the tour group out to the shallows of the ocean where there was a colourful reef below, peppered with vibrant fish, sea horses and even barracudas. It was a magical experience for the adventurer. When the experience came to an end, it was time to get back onto the boat and head back to shore. Unfortunately, as this happened, our explorer managed to scrape themself pretty badly on the sharp edge of the boat. Although not a serious injury, having completed the basic safety course for seafarers, they knew it would be best to get it checked out at the local Mykonos Health Centre, once the boat returned to shore.

Whilst sitting in the waiting room, the explorer admired the amazing work of all the hospital team and healthcare workers that they encountered that day; from the receptionists, porters, paramedics,  nurses to the doctors and surgeons – Health and wellbeing apprenticeships (apprenticeshipguide.co.uk). The explorer appreciated how spotless the hospital was and could see a cleaner hard at work mopping the floors. Afterwards, sitting there for some time, they considered what a vital role this cleaner has in the hospital. At the same time, they also felt saddened at how some of these workers get overlooked, considering how essential they are in keeping a clean and safe environment. ‘What qualifications would you need to be Healthcare Cleaning Operative?’ pondered the explorer.

Whilst researching on Google, the explorer found out you can become one by undergoing a level 2 apprenticeship or completing a college course. To get in, some GCSEs are needed, usually including English and Maths, or equivalent. The work of this cleaner was certainly promoting the health and welfare of the hospital’s patients and something to be proud of.

After being seen by a Doctor, who cleaned and bandaged the cut, the adventurer felt much better and ready to continue on with the adventure, after a good night’s rest at a nearby hotel. The spectacular island of Santorini had always been a bucket-list destination, with its white and blue-roofed, clifftop buildings and turquoise seas. Impulsively, the adventurer purchased a €68 one-way ferry ticket from Mykonos to Santorini for the very next day…
