I first made an appointment with my National Careers Service adviser in October. I’d been working as a cook and cleaner in a nursing home, but I wanted to change career and find a role that was more autonomous. I wanted to set up my own cleaning business and needed some advice and guidance on how to do it.
My adviser, John, talked through my options and helped me feel positive about my decision to leave my current job. He directed me to sources of information about going self-employed. We also identified some courses to help improve my IT skills, English and Maths. My adviser supported me to use a PC which I hadn’t done in a long time; and gave me information on the steps I need to take to become self-employed. My adviser also referred me to a work coach for information on the New Enterprise Allowance scheme.
The National Careers Service has helped with my confidence and helped me to become more focused. I received great advice from a great advisor, who was very helpful and understanding.
