Helen’s Story

I met with CXK within the first two weeks of arriving in prison and have had a review every six months since then. The CXK staff are always there whenever I need advice about my distance learning.

When I first spoke to CXK, I was informed of what activities the prison offered. My adviser answered my questions about job roles, PET courses, education and OU courses, and other distance learning options. They gave me advice and guidance on expanding my job search within the prison and finding employment that would suit me and I would enjoy.

I completed a Personal learning Plan (PLP) with my adviser and I was given many resources such as a timetable for education, a list of activities that were offered, and help and advice on jobs, education and distance learning options. I found these tools supported me in making the right choice in what I wanted to do, both in prison and once released.

“Thank you CXK for all your help to have a better future.”

As a result of working with a CXK adviser, I decided to apply for a job as a peer mentor for the activities department. I also completed a Business Admin course and IAG course. After that I applied for distance learning. First HR, then Accounting, and now I’m about to start my degree in Business Management.

I decided to join CXK to help people when they come into prison. I am finding I enjoy my job and it’s very rewarding to help people who were in the same position as I was and knowing I can help people as I have been helped.

I now have a clearer idea of my options for employment and further education on release. Without the help of CXK I wouldn’t have had the knowledge of what I could do, or the confidence to apply.

I am now able, on my release, to look for a permanent job and also ROTL opportunities. The best thing about the support given to me by CXK is that it has opened up my options, given me knowledge and opportunities that I wouldn’t have otherwise had. They helped me access a laptop for typing up my work, making the courses more accessible to prisoners. They have helped with course applications and advised on course progressions. Thank you CXK for all your help to have a better future.
