Katy’s Story

young girl smilingI came across CXK’s Prince’s Trust Team programme when I was looking for apprenticeship opportunities. I was out of education at the time. I’d done 6-8 weeks at college before deciding that I didn’t like it because it was too laid back; there was no structure to it. When I quit, I went to see if I could get into sixth form; but all the places were taken, so I started looking for apprenticeships. That’s when I found the Team programme.

I started the programme in November 2018. The residential was the best part, it was good to be away from home and I just enjoyed the activities really. I also enjoyed the community project, which led to me securing a permanent volunteering role working with the homeless.

“I was able to build professional people skills”

The most helpful part of the programme was the work experience as it gave me the skills I needed to put onto my C.V. I also think that the career planning element of the programme was extremely helpful as it gave us the opportunity to have a look at what we actually need to apply for jobs.
Being a part of the programme taught me a lot. I definitely learned tolerance with others as my patience is usually really thin with people. I was also able to build more professional people skills.

The experience got me ready for situations that I might come across, like interviews, jobs and volunteering. It’s helped me to find my next steps.

“I want to continue to volunteer “

In the future I want to continue to volunteer until I find either a full time job or an apprenticeship. I am currently looking for either a mechanics apprenticeship or an administration apprenticeship, but also any full time retail/waitressing job to give me a little extra money.

I definitely have a clearer idea of ways to get there although I’m not 100% sure of exactly what I want to do.

If I hadn’t taken part in the programme, honestly, I have no idea where I’d be.

If I had to give advice to someone in a similar position to me, I’d say just don’t give up, keep trying until you find something and be hopeful for what the future brings.
