I came to prison in December 2023, having been out of education for 17 years. Despite being neurodiverse, I’ve learned to use my ADHD to my advantage. In just 10 months, I’ve achieved so much. By the time I’m released, I will have nearly completed a degree. I plan to continue working with CXK to gain more qualifications while I’m still here, so I can build a better future for myself, my partner, and my daughter through a fulfilling career.
I first met with CXK during my first week in Downview. They shared the available courses with me and asked about the work positions I’d like to pursue. At the time, I expressed that I was unsure and nervous, having been out of education for so long. However, they encouraged me, even suggesting that I try the Open University (OU).
“I now have a clearer idea of where I am heading with a possible future career upon my release. This would never have happened without the help and advice of CXK.”
With their guidance, I completed a Personal Learning Plan (PLP) with my adviser. I was shown the OU prospectus and decided to start with an access course to give university a try. I also had an interest in doing Level 2 Hairdressing, and eventually, I wanted to become a peer support/mentor for the I.S.F.L (drug-free landing).
While waiting for the next hairdressing course to start, I began working as a wing cleaner and started my OU learning. Since then, I’ve completed Level 2 Hairdressing and did really well, as well as finishing my access course at OU.
This progress led to me applying (with CXK’s help) to do a degree in Health and Social Care. I’m now a Peer Mentor for Life Skills and the I.S.F.L, which was the role I was aiming for when I first created my PLP. I now have a much clearer idea of where I’m heading in terms of a future career upon my release, which would never have happened without the help and advice from CXK.
CXK has provided incredible support, particularly in helping me apply to OU and offering assistance with student finance applications. They also informed me about The Longford Trust, which provides help, guidance, and grants for OU students in prison. CXK helped me navigate all the necessary forms.
Looking ahead, my ultimate goal is to return to work in the care sector, supporting the elderly, disabled, and vulnerable adults, either in a social worker role or as a care home manager. I now actively encourage many other prisoners to work with CXK and share how far I’ve come, reminding them that I was once the nervous new prisoner who didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. CXK’s advice and support have truly changed my life for the better.
