Michaela’s Story

I am 54 years old and suffer with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. I have been accessing mental health services for many years and worked within it myself.

After suffering from yet another breakdown,  I left work in July 2021, and began claiming Employment and Support Allowance, and eventually Universal Credit. It was then that I was put in touch with CXK’s Bridge the Gap.

“My adviser was very supportive”

After Dawn, my adviser, explained her role and the support offered, I was reassured to know there may be some future of normality!

My trauma is deep-rooted – Dawn recognised this, was very supportive and listened to my needs. With her support I took part in an online “5 Steps to Wellbeing” course. I attended a ‘taster day’ at Cook, who on the day did not have a vacancy suitable for me, but I shall be keeping in touch regarding future opportunities.

“I received counselling – fully funded”

The best thing for me has been the 8 counselling sessions,  fully funded, which I have received as part of CXK’s Bridge the Gap project. I have been on a waiting list for Psychology since April 2021 and have monthly communication with CMHT, so to be able to have these sessions is amazing. I am also now looking to start kickboxing to help with my self-confidence.

“I am extremely grateful”

I am extremely grateful for this service. Although I have not yet moved into work, the steps that Dawn has given me makes me believe that I will be able to make that step by the end of the year. My future plans are to complete my counselling, find some inner peace and eventually look into supporting others with mental health issues.

CXK’s Bridge the Gap is a free, professional mentoring service that can work with you to build the skills and confidence you need to move forward in your personal development and towards the world of work. Currently the service is available to individuals living in Canterbury, Swale and Thanet.
