Simon’s Story

At 60 years old looking for work is a daunting prospect, and I really wanted to do everything I possibly could to help me find a good role. I’d spent 10 years as a support worker before deciding to change careers, and was looking to get into office work in a social care setting – ideally for a local authority!

Having felt daunted, I was looking for support when I was advised that the National Careers Service was a good option to try.

“My adviser was down-to-earth, informative, knowledgeable and helpful throughout our discussion.”

We worked through career management activities and even explored free training available, which gave me inspiration on the sort of courses I’m interested in – I had no idea there was so much available for free.

My adviser supported me to enrol onto a Level 2 Principles of Business Administration distance learning course through a college, which I’ve now submitted and passed the first assessment for it.

After a few days my adviser sent me a new skills-based CV which looked so much better than my old one. I had crafted my old CV purely off of my chronological work timeline and hadn’t showcased what was really important… My skills!

My CV has been well received by potential recruitment agencies and employers.”

The support I received boosted my confidence, helped me to develop relevant skills, and left me with a CV I couldn’t be prouder of, and you know what, I wouldn’t have done any of the above without the National Careers Service input and support.

I left my National Careers Service session with one personal aim – to secure in which I could support others in some way, and to be happy doing it.

“The local authorities liked my CV, and honestly, I may not have secured the role without it”

I ended up starting a new role as a Social Care Coordinator with Reading Borough council in July! Even though I’m contract staff, it should be a long-term opportunity. The local authorities are even looking to qualify me in the role, so who knows, maybe down the line it’ll even become a permanent role!

It’s a big step-up for me in responsibility, visiting clients and carers to assess their needs, and to put the support in place to ensure their needs are met. It’s a massive learning curve for me, and to be honest, an opportunity that I didn’t think was likely to happen at 60 years old.

“When I spoke to my National Careers Service adviser I was unemployed, and now I’m employed as a Social Care Coordinator with the local authorities. I would definitely recommend the National Careers Service; you have nothing to lose! It’s just great that help and support like this is available.”
